Ancef (cefazolin) is a medication beloved by surgeons because of its ability to prevent (and even treat) infections.

Category

Cefazolin is a first-generation cephalosporin, for whatever that's worth.

Dosing

Guidelines from several medical professional societies, including the Infectious Diseases Society of America and Surgical Infection Society, recommend a dose of 2 grams within 60 minutes prior to surgical incision or "go time."

Administration

Ancef is adminstered via an Ancef pump, which orthopods treat with admiration and affection.[1][2] They will even resort to using stethoscopes to try to listen to the Ancef pump and make sure it is functionining properly.[3] No orthopod has ever successfully given up Ancef for their New Year's Resolution.[4]

Current Events

On February 2, 2017, the U.S. Senate confirmed Tom Price as the new Secretary of Health and Human Services. Within hours of his confirmation, Secretary Price consulted Medicine for medical management, and named Ancef a national antibiotic. Experts believe his next order of business is to somehow put the chemical structure for Ancef on the American flag.
