Mario
Mario or Super Mario is the face of the Nintendo franchise and arguably the most famous video game character of all-time. Over the past several years, this Italian plumber has been increasingly present in health care news.
Mario & Medicine
- On September 15, 2014, Super Mario accidentally consumed a deadly Amanita mushroom, thinking it was a 1-UP, and was hospitalized first at World 7-2 Hospital then transferred World 4-3 Hospital due to their liver transplant abilities.[1] Though Mario would eventually recover, he now prefers Super Star power-ups over Mushroom ones.
- On September 11, 2016, while Super Mario was still recovering at rehab from his Amanita-induced hepatitis, the Da Vinci surgical robot subbed in and helped in the quest to save Princess Toadstool.[2] Not surprisingly, Da Vinci failed because he failed to complete each level in the allotted time given.
- On January 13, 2017, first-year UCLA medical student Mac Little gave his copy of Super Mario Bros. two rescue breaths in an attempt to resuscitate the video game cartridge.[3] Numerous studies have shown that rescue breathing is more effective in old-school game cartridges than unconscious patients.
Did You Know?
Mario is still upset that a gene was named after Sonic the Hedgehog and not him?[4] It has always been a source of tension between the two video game heroes.
