For anesthesiology residents looking to further subspecialize, there are several anesthesiology fellowship programs available. For example, Duke University offers 12 one-year fellowships while University of North Carolina offers 1 twelve-year fellowship. Anyone who wishes to pursue research upon completion of a one-year fellowship is automatically labelled a gunner.[1][2]


Types of Anesthesiology Fellowships


Anesthesiology fellowships tend to focus on any of the following:

  1. Critical care medicine
  2. Not-very-critical medicine
  3. Acute pain
  4. Acute malingering
  5. 20-out-of-10 pain
  6. Postmortem medicine
