re out on the middle of the sea, rowing, forthe wind was against them, but Jesus was alone on the shore. From there hecould see them toiling in rowing, for the waves were rough and stormy. Andin the night he went out to them, walking on the sea. When they saw him, they were afraid, and said, It is a spirit: and they cried out with fear. ButJesus spoke to them, saying, Be not afraid, It is I. Then Peter answered out of the boat, and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid mecome to thee on the water. Jesus said to him, Come. And Peter came downout of the boat, and walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he heardthe noise of the wind and saw the great waves dashing around him, he wasafraid, and began to sink, and he cried, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesusstretched out his hand, and caught him, and said to him, O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt? When Jesus and Peter had come into the boat, the wind was still; and in a moment the boat was at the land where they wanted to be. 248

Like the rest of the Jews, they had not yet learned thathe had come to rule only in their hearts, and to have his kingdom there; andthat instead of fighting battles for them and ruling over them as a king, he wasgoing to die on the cross for their sins. But from this time he began to tell them what was really going to happento him; that he must go to Jerusalem and there be cruelly treate
