A totem pole dedicated to a surgical team at University of Washington

A totem pole is a sculpture carved onto a large tree typically found in the Pacific Northwest and depicts the ranking of medical personnel in a hierarchy. Though many providers refer to themselves as "low" or "lower" on the totem pole, medical students[1][2] are still the lowest with July 1st interns[3][4][5][6][7] just above them.
