Empyema necessitans refers to a purulent pleural effusion that escapes the pleural cavity and invades the chest wall and soft tissues.[1] Why the necessitans? If we had to guess, necessitans is Latin for necessary, but is extension of an infection into the chest wall necessary? We don't think so. Please write your local representative so that we can rename this disorder.
