Empyema necessitans refers to a purulent pleural effusion that escapes the pleural cavity and invades the chest wall and soft tissues.[1] Why the necessitans? If we had to guess, necessitans is Latin for necessary, but is extension of an infection into the chest wall necessary? We don't think so.
