Ancef (cefazolin) is medication beloved by surgeons because of their ability to prevent (and even treat) infections.

Category

Cefazolin is a first-generation cephalosporin, for whatever that's worth.

Dosing

Guidelines from several medical professional societies, including the Infectious Diseases Society of America and Surgical Infection Society, recommend a dose of 2 grams within 60 minutes prior to surgical incision or "go time."

Administration

Ancef is adminstered via an Ancef pump, which orthopods treat with admiration and affection.^[1][2] They will even resort to using stethoscopes to try to listen to the Ancef pump and make sure it is functionining properly.^[3] No orthopod has ever successfully given up Ancef for their New Year's Resolution.^[4]
