NPO Variations

In preparation for a test or procedure, it is not uncommon to order that a patient is NPO, the most common variations include NPO after midnight and NPO except medications.  But these aren't the only variations:

  1. NPO[1][2][3][4]
  2. NPO after midnight
  3. NPO after Christmas
  4. NPO after full moon
  5. NPO after new Lady Gaga album comes out
  6. NPO after summer solstice
  7. NPO after Wednesday
  8. NPO except medications
  9. NPO except ice chips
  10. NPO except potato chips
  11. NPO except meals
  12. NPO except virgin blood[5]
  13. NPO 'til death do us part
  14. NPO Tuesdays/Thursdays/Saturdays[6]
  15. NPO until 2018
  16. NPO until patient fesses up where he/she hid all the graham crackers
