NPO is code for nothing/nada/nil per oral, often placed before patients undergo procedures like upper or lower endoscopy. Before a patient is ever made NPO, a long discussion takes place between the ordering provider and patient regarding the risks and benefits of becoming NPO as it can, at times, go awry and cause death by starvation.[1]
