Discharge Haiku

A discharge haiku is a form of discharge summary that is inspired by Japanese poetry and summarizes a long hospitalization in 3 phrases of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. It is the most efficient and beautiful way to present a complicated hospital course.

Examples of a Discharge Haiku

Patient admitted

Some stuff happened in between

Patient was discharged

Patient had a cough

Man, she coughed and coughed and coughed

Discharge to hospice

Transferred to MICU

Intubated and pressors

Is it time for lunch?
