"I'm starving to death" is a phrase a patient might say immediately after being made NPO, and it should not be taken lightly. As was learned in the unfortunate case of Eric Stephens, a patient who says "I'm starving to death" is telling the truth and is at high risk for spontaneous death by starvation within 2 hours.[1]
Treatment
Feed the patient.
