Rhabdomyolysis is an unnecessarily long word to describe the condition in which skeletal muscle breaks down because you worked out a little too hard. From hereonin, we will use the much easier to say and write rhabdo.

Signs and Symptoms

Rhabdo is characterized by muscle pain, weakness, and dark-colored urine. There is usually an underlying cause like a crush injury, seizures, polymyositis, doing 1 million push ups, or running back-and-forth cross the United States "just because" like Forrest Gump.[1]

Mechanism

Inflamed and managed skeletal tissue basically says "f**k it!" and implodes, spilling stuff like creatine kinase (CK) and uric acid into the blood, which can subsequently kill the kidneys big time.

Diagnosis

Rhabdo is suspected when one's serum rhabdo level is abnormal. Useless tests are CK, creatinine, and myoglobin.

Treatment

A sh*t ton of IV fluids.

Fun Facts

Did you know that Forrest Gump had rhabdo for over 30 years? That teaches us a very valuable lesson: exercise does more harm than good.
