Rhabdomyolysis is an unnecessarily long word to describe the condition in which skeletal muscle breaks down because you worked out a little too hard. From hereonin, we will use the much easier to say and write rhabdo.
Signs and Symptoms
Rhabdo is characterized by muscle pain, weakness, and dark-colored urine. There is usually an underlying cause like a crush injury, seizures, polymyositis, doing 1 million push ups, or running back-and-forth cross the United States "just because" like Forrest Gump.
Rhabdo is suspected when one's serum rhabdo level is abnormal. Useless tests are CK, creatinine, and myoglobin.
A sh*t ton of IV fluids.
Did you know that Forrest Gump had rhabdo for over 30 years? That teaches us a very valuable lesson: exercise does more harm than good.
