In medical terms, a remission refers to tests showing that signs of a patient's cancer is gone. This is welcome news. The patient Saul in Samuel Shem's The House of God does not realize this.

"It's wonderful!" I said, realizing how I'd kept myself from hoping anything for Saul, given the odds against these buddings, these buds, and I ran up to his room, and panting, yelled at him, "Saul, you've got a remission!"

"Sounds bad," he said, "first leukemia, now remission. Oiy."

In an ideal world, a patient uses this experience to grow. Then again, maybe not.[1]
