Rejection reactions refer to how a consultant reacts to the request for a consult.[1][2]

Classifications

  1. Hyperacute rejection - This form of consult rejection occurs within 15 seconds of the request. Often times, the consultant will laugh, hang up, say an emphatic "NO!" before you even finish speaking.
  2. Acute rejection - This form of consult rejection occurs within 5 minutes. In this type, the consultant will actually listen to your request for a consult, as if they might say "Yes!" but then they actually say "No."
  3. Acute humoral rejection - This is when a consultant politely declines a request and even laughs about it.
  4. Chronic rejection - This is characterized by a consultant saying "No" to consults over a period of 4 to 6 months. It is most commonly seen among surgical subspecialties.
