Da Vinci Begging for Spare Surgeries.jpg

To ask for something as charity of a gift. There are several types of begging: (1) begging for food or money in the case of med students or residents[1], (2) begging for spare surgeries in the case of the Da Vinci surgical robot[2], or (3) begging for Dilaudid in the case of drug seekers.[3]

The Begging Trainee

The begging trainee may be very subtle (reluctantly accepting an attending's invitation to take the team out to dinner) or very blunt ("I need your spare change to make rent"). They will beg nurses, phlebotomists, palliative care, even patients and their families. They may hold out their hand and ask for direct placement of any donated goods into their palms, but some may even resort to carrying collection containers or pushing shopping carts. Some trainees may use their rare, precious moments of not working by catching up on sleep, but others will set up camp outside the nurses station ringing a bell, often being mistaken for the American Red Cross (Gomerblog). If begging doesn't produce the desired results for a trainee, then many will start stripping in order to make ends meet.
