The four humours refers to one of two models for the workings of the human body. The first model, described by Hippocrates, pertains to the body and its emotions, with the four humours being blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm. The second model, described by Gomerblog, pertains to the body and joke-telling, with the four humors being blood jokes, black bile jokes, yellow bile jokes, and phlegm jokes. As common as poop jokes are, they are not part of the original four humours as envisioned by Gomerblog.

How Funny Are Hippocrates' Four Humours?

Hippocrates, the Father of Modern Medicine, did not have Google. Back in those days, it was believed that health was conveyed by a balance of black bile, yellow bile, phlegm, and blood. Disease was the result of imbalance. This sounds like serious stuff. For that reason, Gomerblog is here to tease out if anything about these four humours are really that funny.

  1. Black bile - The term “melancholy” is derived from black bile, and it was believed that an excess of black bile caused depression. CONCLUSION: Unless you believe this black bile humor is a subset of black comedy, then black bile is definitely not funny.
  2. Yellow bile - Aggression was thought to be a a result of excess yellow bile, which directly affected the balance of the other humors. CONCLUSION: Aggressive laughter isn’t a thing, so we vote no for this too.
  3. Phlegm - Phlegm is associated with apathy, winter, old age, and cold. Sometimes in old age we can observe some funny things particularly in the case of the pleasantly-demented patient who says some crazy things.[1][2] But winter, apathy, and cold aren’t particularly funny. If anything they’re downright depressing. CONCLUSION: Not funny.
  4. Blood - During Hippocrates’ time, blood was thought be supplied by the liver. Blood was associated with spring, infancy, and air. We now know that this is incorrect; it is supplied by the American Red Cross. Seasonal allergies is not funny especially when pollen levels spike. Infancy is kind of funny, but there’s a lot of crying too. As for air, we now know breathing is critical and not breathing is no laughing matter. CONCLUSION: Blood isn’t funny.
