A yearly ritual among brand-new interns, a fire is something into which they are literally thrown to commemorate what will be nothing short of a horrible year ahead. Sometimes they are thrown in by hand, other times they are thrown in by other means.[1] The fire is a continuous blaze that lasts until an intern drops out, dies, or makes it to June 30 of the following year, whichever comes first. Interns who survive the fire and move onto their second year of residency are said to have made it “unscathed,” though they often have distinct char marks on their white coats. Because this has been a ritual for centuries, it should not be surprising that pagers are flame-retardant.
